(I work with ill-sighted people and have written alt text for the best part of the last 15 years).

There is no one answer, sadly. We work with humans.

(And let's not start debating on longdesc, another story entirely, wide open to jakobsonian poetic interpretations) ;)

It is true there's no one answer; people's needs (and access to software) are different. Our tastes are different too. I do think not saying the type of media is better, because the software tends to handle that better than alt text does.

P.S. In English, "ill sighted" is not the phrase to use; we visually impaired people use "visually impaired."
