Worth noting the Atari ST did have soundtrackers too - you didn't need an STE.
Mixing and playback were cpu driven and intensive, so you couldn't use it in-game, but you could use it for title scenes.
The Atari ST also had a lively demo scene, with talented people making the machine do things it wasn't supposed to do - such as soundtrackers.
