Something I miss from #Tiling wms/compositors like #i3wm and #sway when I'm on #KDE:

I use #Yakuake on KDE #Plasma to have a terminal that's easily accessible, but stays out of my way when I don't want to see it.

On tiling setups, I use disappearing windows (I forget the actual name of the feature) that will pop up when I hit super+-, appear one at a time, and then disappear.

Yakuake lets you do tiling as well within its window, but I kinda miss the ability to cycle through a bunch of windows very easily. I mean, I've got the keyboard shortcuts set up very nicely, so it's just F12 to make the window appear and disappear, and then control+tab to cycle through tabs or control+pgup/pgdown to jump between panes, but somehow the tiling setup is just a bit easier to do. Less thinking, just super+-. ;)

I don't know if I'll continue to use tiling setup too much longer, though. It's too aggravating to figure out how to get the occasional gnome program to work properly. There's always some kind of fancy library initialization that I fail to get right. It's easier to just use a DE and whittle it down to nearly tiling levels of productivity.

The way I work in 2025. A fun tour through my workstation setup: i3, Firefox, Emacs and shortcuts galore. Theming and translucency. Automated daily routine, including networking, VPN setup, backups and agenda files. Oh, and I use Arch, btw.

Been tweaking my #Rofi theme, because it was rainy and I was too knackered to do anything else useful today. Rofi is an application switcher and more (calculator, character picker, launcher, weather widget, etc.). It is used in minimalist window managers like #i3wm, instead of a top-bar, dock or Start™ menu.
I used to use #Litestep on Windows, and using i3 and Rofi to DIY my own graphical shell feels similar.

I had to explain to a Mac user today that, for my Linux laptop to warn me about low battery, instead of just shutting down, I had to download a script from GitHub and set it up in my #i3wm window manager. But that's a small price to pay for the freedom to customise my system exactly how I want - without deferring to some Apple engineers to decide "what's good for me."

Después de un tiempo vale darse una vuelta por un #ViernesDeEscritorio , para no saturar. Como hace mucho en #i3wm bajo #archlinux, aprovechando para hacer un upgrade del sistema.
#polybar con script varios, entre ellos uno para visualizar lo que se reproduce con mopidy + ncmpcpp (musica o podcast) En fin nada fuera de lo habitual.

I had a very silly problem running my #i3wm (resolved now) and had to try some other window/desktop managers for a day.
I've tried #xfce4 and #kde6. I'm impressed how mature and polished the KDE was, although running a bit slow at times. xfce is lean ans sleek, much less complex without feeling being incomplete.
My hackish, fully keyboard driven #i3wm and #kitty terminals setup looks like it was made in a shed of sticks and zip ties. However, its ergonomics and how it fits to me is unrivaled, its speed and responsiveness are top-notch and it feels so good getting back to it. I've kept Thunar, will use it from time to time instead of #mc and #zsh.

This is a Cinnamon desktop (currently. not sure what i was doing when i asked that. i'll have to try it and see what it looks like today. i am determined to get #i3wm #swayfx and / or #Hyprland to function correctly on this system @linkachus17 ~!

I was checking out #kdevelop which seems really badass and well-put-together so to speak. i'm sure there's a better 90's word, i mean, 2025's word for it.

anyway.

it's just too much to try to get all of the details. for me, at least. but i did get that far!

#i3wm vs #xmonad ? i3 seems to be more popular, xmonad is written in Haskell, so since it compiles it works.

But they seem quite similar in functionality.

What is great about #i3wm is that if you want the application switcher to also include info like the time and what it's like outside, you can just tweak some config files, set up a systemd timer to run a script that fetches the data from wttr.in, and you get the time and weather right there in your application switcher.
What's not so great about i3wm is that you can tweak some config files, set up a systemd timer to run a script that fetches the data from wttr.in, and get the time and weather right in your application switcher, then start thinking about some other tweaks you could do, and hello it's 1 in the morning and you haven't actually done that actual thing you sat down at the computer to do.
(What is brilliant is that the person who actually developed the #rofi application switcher will help you when you ask on the github discussion page).
