Chris Alemany🇺🇦🇨🇦🇪🇸<p>Was pleasantly surprised to see the BBC giving an Indigenous woman more words in this story.</p><p>"On one of these annual 186-mile (300km) journeys, Ms Kabloona's grandmother went into labour and gave birth to her father in a tent along the way.</p><p>"Two days later, she got up and carried on walking," Ms Kabloona said.</p><p>"She did that in every single one of her pregnancies, traversed our land, because that is our way of life and always has been."”</p><p>"Show respect to the land and the people who have kept it pristine for your adventures."</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/Canada" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Canada</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/North" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>North</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/Inuit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Inuit</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/Indigenous" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Indigenous</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/BaffinIsland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BaffinIsland</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/UK" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UK</span></a><br><a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4g375ke65xo" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">bbc.com/news/articles/c4g375ke</span><span class="invisible">65xo</span></a></p>
Dr. Evan J. Gowan<p>Belko et al investigate the glacial landforms on the two troughs on the continental shelf off the northern coast of the Cumberland Peninsula on eastern Baffin Island. Their goal was to determine the limit of the Laurentide Ice Sheet at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). </p><p>The results show that the maximum ice extent of the more easterly Merchants Trough failed to reach the shelf edge. The more westerly Broughton Trough almost reached the edge. The morphology of the trough prevented the ice from fully advancing to the edge, unlike areas further north.</p><p>They conclude that the eastern part of the Cumberland Peninsula was covered by alpine glaciers during the LGM, while further west, a more extensive Penny Ice Cap caused ice to flow over the mountains and advance towards the shelf edge. </p><p>The drainage of the Laurentide ice sheet by the Cumberland Sound Ice Stream likely prevented ice to overtop the mountains on the eastern Cumberland Peninsula.</p><p><a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/ClimateChange" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateChange</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/IceSheets" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IceSheets</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/BaffinIsland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BaffinIsland</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/Canada" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Canada</span></a></p><p><a href="https://doi.org/10.1111/bor.70000" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">doi.org/10.1111/bor.70000</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>

Flipboard Science Desk<p>Scientists have detected a surprising amount of helium-3 in volcanic rocks on Canada’s Baffin Island, supporting to the theory that the noble gas is leaking from Earth’s core — and has been for a very long time. Benjamin Carr, Ph.D. 👨🏻‍💻🧬<p>Scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (<a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/WHOI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WHOI</span></a>) have made a fascinating discovery in the Arctic. They have found that ancient <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/lava" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lava</span></a> from <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/BaffinIsland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BaffinIsland</span></a> in <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Canada" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Canada</span></a>'s <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Arctic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Arctic</span></a> Archipelago have highest ratios of <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/helium" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>helium</span></a>-3 (<a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/3He" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>3He</span></a>) to helium-4 (<a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/4He" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>4He</span></a>). This suggests extremely high levels of 3He in these lavas might come from <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Earth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Earth</span></a>'s core. This groundbreaking finding could potentially rewrite our understanding of history of ancient elements in center of our planet. <a href="https://www.vice.com/en/article/93kgwd/earths-core-appears-to-be-leaking-in-the-arctic-and-scientists-dont-know-why" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">vice.com/en/article/93kgwd/ear</span><span class="invisible">ths-core-appears-to-be-leaking-in-the-arctic-and-scientists-dont-know-why</span></a></p>
