"You're marooned, now survive until you can be rescued / escape" is classic. My version is pretty much "Flight of the Phoenix" with a time machine. While the story would "work" in another setting, because it has already been done in other settings, it'd be very different.

#amwriting

My current WIP is much more about the characters than about the setting.

I kind of like the setting I've come up with, and I think it adds a nice touch, but for the main arc, it's largely a backdrop. If someone rubbed rotten tomatoes into it and I had to replace it with another, the story itself would need fairly minimal adjustments to work about as well with just about any other backdrop.

It would just be so vastly different, I don't think there'd be much point.

Plus, I like my magic system! I wouldn't want to change it.

If the world was more divergent from ours, coming on a wood spirit in the forest while doing brush cleanup would not be a surprise and Carol almost certainly would be an entirely different person with different goals.

We're a collaboration with the universe. Put us in a different universe, and you get different people who experience different things, have different opportunities and consequences, and make different choices.

But Galahad loves going on about how he did quite some impressive things when he was commanding exploratory missions on the outskirts of the universe in his younger years and it is kind of a running gag because he bores everybody who knows him for more than three days with it.
