bodhidave<p>I've studied and practiced <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/contemplative" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>contemplative</span></a> traditions rather intensively for a long time. </p><p>And it seems to me the heart of those traditions and their practice is something both elusive and simple:</p><p>the utter wonder that anything at all is happening.</p><p>And a best way to realize and honor and appreciate that, is, as <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Zen" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Zen</span></a> teacher Mazu put it, to just "not contrive." </p><p>It's always already this — before we have a plan, or a theology, or even any thought-up ideas.</p>

Tilda Moose, citizen<p>Been genuinely wondering how far <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/monasticism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>monasticism</span></a> could <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/scale" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>scale</span></a> up, to the size of an entire town, city, country, etc.</p><p>I love the [idea of a] <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/contemplative" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>contemplative</span></a> life, and am curious to know how <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/sustainable" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sustainable</span></a> it could be, eg. combined with growing <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/organic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>organic</span></a> food locally, doing our own making and mending, and not having to stink up the atmosphere with cars commuting to distant bullshit jobs any more.</p>

They're fun. <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Plato" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Plato</span></a> was highly creative, and <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/philosophy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>philosophy</span></a> for him was ultimately a <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/contemplative" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>contemplative</span></a> practice.</p><p>In his *Ion,* he's looking to have Socrates suggest that, unlike the sophists, philosophers actually have inspired insight, but, unlike the poets, philosophers' inspiration doesn't eclipse their sense of self. bodhidave<p>Language for expressing <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/contemplative" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>contemplative</span></a> practice can sound hyperbolic and romantic ... until you find it's matter-of-factly descriptive of what you're experiencing.</p><p>In tonight's <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/meditation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>meditation</span></a>, the practice came to expression for me this way:</p><p>Be the miracle that is this moment — in not being anything that you aren't.</p>

Attention is a kind of "mental light" that extends towards a thought or phenomenal object and illuminates it and touches it and grasps it. </p><p>And he recommended that we sometimes practice "letting go" of our grasped thoughts and mental objects.</p><p>That is what <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/unknowing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>unknowing</span></a> is.</p>

bodhidave<p>This evening's <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/contemplative" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>contemplative</span></a> rumination:</p><p>I sometimes <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/meditate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>meditate</span></a> in my sleep. And that helps me realize that my waking thinking "ego" self isn't the starting point — like sleep, it comes from somewhere; it's generated; it's an expression.</p><p>And that further helps me in allowing a kind of balance between the need to dis-identify with and let go of the ego, on one had, and allowing a kind of embrace with its occurrence, one another.</p><p>Our waking, thinking, egoic self is a sample of the living truth.</p>
