"The Importance of Choosing the Correct Mastodon Instance" with references to @aeris Choosing your instance is hard. (And public statements are not enough, they can be misleading and TL;DR, anyway)
If people were able to create decentralized social networks like #Mastodon, then shouldn’t it be possible to create also decentralized social coding protocols? #IPFS could possibly be used as a #Git storage backend and #PGP for authentication.
Oh, I just saw that Ring 1.0 is finally out since yesterday!
Ring is an open source equivalent to Skype which is fully decentralized and which encrypts all video, audio and text communications.
It is compatible with GNU/Linux, Windows, MacOS and Android
Another good initiative to support!
On Thursday July 27th begins the Sale of Filecoin Tokens and it will run for 4 weeks or until all tokens are sold!
Filecoin is a kind of crypto-currency to allow people to share storage space. So you can store your encrypted data on someone else computer against Filecoins.
As I don't see any news about this on the website, you may need to subscribe to the newsletter to get information to become investor in Filecoin.
Mastodon is to Twitter/Facebook
Matrix is to Discord/Slack
GNU Ring is to Skype/Whatsapp/Messenger
Particl is to Ebay/Amazon
Email was to CompuServe/GEnie/AOL/etc.
None of those online messaging services could talk to each other before SMTP brought them all together and connected all their users across the different hosts.
It's kind of sensationalist, and a bit of a weird comparison. The sources aren't all amazing, but I'll be damned if this didn't help me explain my desire to fix the internet to some normies.

Been on this instance for about a month now. Still havent done an #introduction (or #introductions ?) post. Well, hello everyone. I'm Neon/that-dude-with-the-felix-avatar, whichever you want to call me. I make videogames, post about things I think about, and sometimes repost some chinese cartoons. I also live on my self-hosted instance, it's a very cozy echochamber.
@aral talked about #Mastodon (and Snapchat, decentralization and more) on Al Jazeera: http://www.aljazeera.com/programmes/insidestory/2017/05/snapchat-financial-difficulties-170511200607709.html.
The Dat project released a white paper on the Dat protocol yesterday https://github.com/datproject/docs/tree/master/papers #decentralization
