arXiv.orgThe Privacy-Utility Trade-off in the Topics APIThe ongoing deprecation of third-party cookies by web browser vendors has sparked the proposal of alternative methods to support more privacy-preserving personalized advertising on web browsers and applications. The Topics API is being proposed by Google to provide third-parties with "coarse-grained advertising topics that the page visitor might currently be interested in". In this paper, we analyze the re-identification risks for individual Internet users and the utility provided to advertising companies by the Topics API, i.e. learning the most popular topics and distinguishing between real and random topics. We provide theoretical results dependent only on the API parameters that can be readily applied to evaluate the privacy and utility implications of future API updates, including novel general upper-bounds that account for adversaries with access to unknown, arbitrary side information, the value of the differential privacy parameter $ε$, and experimental results on real-world data that validate our theoretical model.

The ICO has pointed to a handful of possible vulnerabilities in the Sandbox’s tools that could be exploited to compromise user privacy and even potentially identify individual users who have opted out of being tracked across the web.

“We are disappointed that Google has changed its plans and no longer intends to deprecate third party cookies from the Chrome browser,” said Stephen Bonner, deputy commissioner at the ICO, in a statement shared with The Drum. “From the start of Google’s Sandbox project in 2019, it has been our view that blocking third-party cookies would be a positive step for consumers.”"

@oblomov My initial gut reaction was the same. And I still think it may be wise to opt out of this experiment until it is better understood.

But what if this initiative could indeed serve as a privacy-preserving replacement for #tracking? It looks better than all the terrible ideas Google came up with to replace cookies (#FLoC #PrivacySandbox #TopicsAPI) let alone #browserFingerprinting.

Nach jahrelanger Kritik an invasivem Werbetracking kündigte Google im September 2023 an, #Drittanbieter-#Cookies aus dem Chrome-#Browser zu entfernen. Seitdem werden Nutzer:innen nach und nach dazu aufgefordert, mit der “#PrivacySandbox” eine angebliche “Funktion zum #Datenschutz bei #Werbung” zu aktivieren. In Wirklichkeit verbirgt sich dahinter eine neue Form des #Tracking's.

Sie bedeutet: 3rdparty-Cookies fallen weg bei #Chrome, neu kommen viele neue Schnittstellen wie.
Fazit: "Das ist aus Benutzer-Sicht durchaus ein Zuwachs an Privatsphäre (Daten, welche den Browser nicht verlassen, können nicht durch Dritte missbraucht werden), führt aber auch zu einer Stärkung der Position des Browsers bzw. des Browser-Herstellers."
