This is the start of our "Back to School" series which will feature schools from Waiau, Murihiku:

According to FWG Millers history, Eastern Bush School was not opened until 1 January 1892 and previously the school children had been taught in the Scobie’s woolshed on the Accommodation House/Hotel property. We have a list of early teachers and students. What we are missing is more photos. Can you help with this? Thanks!

A grouped of early school children in black and white, from the tiny settlement of Eastern Bush in the Waiau District of Murihiku Southland, Aotearoa NZ. The photo is thought to be dated from the early 1920s. The children are very formally dressed, the girls all have their hair up and bows in it. The boys look like they are off to church in their Sunday Best. There is one female teacher, who ended up becoming the wife of one of the early settlers on the land here.
