Is your name on that list? If not, consider supporting this grassroots volunteer effort as one of your #BikeMonth actions: bikemonterey.org/about/financi. Thank you!

Thurs, May 8 at 6 pm in the Gawain Family Outdoor Theater at York School: Ben Jealous, Monterey County native and currently executive director of Sierra Club. Event is free and open to the public. - Report by Agata Popęda, #MontereyCountyNow montereycountynow.com/blogs/op

Our #transportation advisory: York School is off Highway 68, which we personally bike on frequently but as brief a distance as possible (high-speed traffic, no bike lane). Carpooling encouraged. (TMK, and it’s a Catch 22: Due to heavy traffic on CA SR 68, making it nearly impossible to keep to a schedule, it’s just not feasible for Monterey Salinas Transit to provide bus service.)

Speaking of Hwy 68: We’re about to make yet another report to #Caltrans about more broken car parts not cleared from the shoulder. (Sigh. Not unusual, e.g., sfba.social/@bikemonterey/1137.) Where to report: csr.dot.ca.gov/

May 2025 is the 16th Anniversary of Bicycling Monterey, Monterey County’s Local Partner of the California Bicycle Coalition / #CalBike. Our favorite #BikeAdvocacy task is direct outreach by bicycle! Here is a sampling of people we met each of the past 16 years. Among them: #PeopleWhoBike for #transportation, recreation, who bike to #protest rallies, bike to #FarmersMarkets, bike to #surf, #BikeToSchool and #BikeAndRide for a #DadAndDaughter date, #BikeToWork (and yes, pedaling in a business #suit is no problem for him), #HandCycle bike to exercise the #dog, bike to #travel long distances / #BicycleTouring.

The bicycle education program at the Monterey County Probation Department Youth Center was founded by Bicycling Monterey in April 2012 and still rolls on in April 2025!

The bike tech class series—providing bicycle repair and maintenance instruction—is only possible because of two volunteers who stepped up in 2012 and still continue volunteering on this 13th anniversary: Frank Henderson and Luciano Rodriguez.

California Assembly Bill 1014
#AB1014
#SlowSpeedsSaveLives

Just today a woman who bikes sent me a video showing a motor vehicle as it struck her at the end of West Broadway Urban Village in Seaside. We shuddered to think how much more she’d have suffered if it were going faster.

"So far, the bill has faced no registered opposition and has drawn support from a broad coalition, including the California Bicycle Coalition / #CalBike, Rural County Representatives of California and Streets Are For Everyone. Supervisor Chris Lopez has also shown support for the proposal.” —Report by KYARRA HARRIS in #MontereyHerald

We normally avoid biking California State Route 68 aka Monterey-Salinas Highway at peak rush hour. And likewise, this side road, which has become busy too. Why’d we bike it at that time today? To be home in time for a bike-ped mtg by 6 pm, to hear a presentation about #VisionZero! sfba.social/@bikemonterey/1142

Yes, we managed to keep our thoughts beautiful—especially when we paused to chat, in French, with some visitors stuck in that traffic, as well as because we could (being in a bike lane) zip past the traffic!
