On the very basic surface level it could be read as a horror film. It is slashery in nature. It has very gruesome body mutilation scenes. But the film feels less of a horror and more of something like Nicolas Winding Refn's film Only God Forgives. Only this one has Ari Aster written all over it.

Doing laundry and watching one of the classic Easter movies: Mallrats.

Here's my favorite plot twist/hole I didn't discover until years later when it came out in an HD format: The magic eye poster is NOT a sailboat, despite what everyone in the movie says. See the attachment.

So maybe they were all gaslighting poor Willam and nobody could see it, or maybe the set designer couldn't find one of a sailboat and they didn't bother to change the script to match.

"Director Andrew Ahn adapted the screenplay with producer James Schamus from Ang Lee’s 1993 rom-com — a movie that Chen at one point was going to star in. Chen and Youn, who goes by YJ, spoke to Variety about relating to their characters, how filmmaking differs around the world and finally working together."

You know, every time I watch "Lethal Weapon" I wonder how the fuck it turned into a comedy franchise - the first five minutes is drugs, alcoholism, one of the first examples of a male action protagonist openly crying & two attempted suicides, one of which is a half-naked 20-year-old woman whose attempt succeeds in graphic, drawn-out detail... oh, and there's at least two more suicide attempts later 😱 this movie is goddamn DARK!

Yesterday I rewatched Tremors and I keep thinking about the brilliance (cheesiness) that is the name Valentine McKee. If I had a son (which I won’t), he should be named Valentine McKee. This movie has all the picturesque elements worthy of an Academy Awards of the Bizarre World, not to mention the exquisite script that is full of iconic lines.
