I recently discovered that diagnostic plugs in cars were more or less standard (OBD2) and that you could buy a plug reader for like 30 bucks. I also discovered that some OBD2 prometheus exporters exist.
So now basically my new project is to have a server in my car, like a RPi. It would srcap the OBD2 data locally and backfill it into my home prometheus database whenever the car gets into my home wifi range.

Anybody got to try the new #OsmAnd #OBD plugin ? I'm curious abt the data we're able to display/play with currently ? #carrepair #OBD2 #ECU
I knew Facebook was good for something - a chance comment in one of the groups I browse every now and again pointed me at something I've been looking for for years - OBDII<-->MQTT. Fantastic. Ordered. Now just six months to wait for it. https://www.crowdsupply.com/meatpi-electronics/wican-pro

Hello infosec.exchange! Here's an #introduction. I am currently an #infosec student on #europe starting research on #obd2 dongles, but sometimes I also do #threathunting, #reverseengineering and #ctf for the thrill.
I wanna use this account to talk and ask questions to the wider community. I may also share #iocs of ongoing campaigns from time to time. I also have a main account (@Nnubes256@mas.to) for more general stuff; I'm just moving my #cybersecurity presence where the action is :D
Thank you Scangauge II #OBD2 code scanner for delivering unto me the precious P0684 code which revealed a $100 part I could install myself would let my car start again and save me hundreds at the dealer!
That time of the year when I express my appreciation of Hyper Tough HT300.
The history of cars getting OBD-II ports is interesting and long, dating back 1968 when Volkswagen started optimizing engine control functions by integrating electronics into them, with the part of Bendix that became Control Data Corporation (where my father worked when I was born).
Good sensors were expensive, so a lot of functions in early engine control modules relied on open-loop control mechanisms and precomputed data from the lab.
As computers were integrated into cars, adding Displays or indicator bulbs for all of the possible conditions would have been expensive and impractical, so they used the "check engine" light as a proxy and put the rest of the signals on the diagnostic ports.
