Guess which budgie my children named?
Arie was alone for about a year, I hoped he would be inclined to interact with me more, but he was lonely and mostly interested in trying to befriend my dog. So I had an opportunity to rescue this goofy budgie. They were friends at first tweet.

January is #AdoptARescuedBirdMonth, and we have plenty of #birds in our care in need of new homes, including Opal and Garnet at Nevins Farm. They’re both #Budgerigars–a kind of parakeet–and are docile, gentle, and can even talk! Opal is a baby, so she needs to go to a home with a #parakeet or existing flock. Visit during open hours (12-4:30p, Tue-Sun) to adopt!

Yesterday, my 12-year old budgie crossed the rainbow bridge. She seemed a bit shaky on her perch the day before, supporting herself a bit with her beak on the wire cage. We adopted her from our son 5 or more years ago, never expecting her to live for 12 years. The house is quieter today. I think our dog, Guapo, smelled death. He seemed sad, just as Bubbles the budgie seemed sad and was unusually quiet about a year ago when our 13-year-old dog, Bella, was euthanized in our arms. I am feeling a bit sad about this budgie transition—our home will feel different now. I cleaned the medium-size empty cage this morning and will give it away to someone who wants their small bird to have a bit more room for exercise.
P.S. More than 50 years ago, a high school classmate of mine did a presentation about euthanasia in English class. Every time she said the word, I thought she was saying “youth in Asia.” I was very confused.

#Pakistan's 4 wild #parakeet species have suffered precipitous #PopulationDecline in recent decades, with their current numbers a mere fragment of what they used to be, #wildlife expert Anis Rehman tells #Anadolu.
#HumanBehavior is mostly to blame for their decline into locally #endangered status, as local communities and others have engaged in #poaching and #trafficking of the prized #birds, while also cutting down the old hollow trees where they nest.
The solution lies in a 'strict' #ban on the poaching and smuggling of parakeets until their population recovers, according to Rab Nawaz of World Wide Fund for #Nature #WWF Pakistan, who said that if these are contained, parakeet populations could recover in 'a few years'.
Update: Toby made it through the long weekend, but the soonest the avian vet can see her is tomorrow.

As if things weren't bad enough, my linnie Toby is showing signs of eggbinding, which is an emergency and will result in her death if not treated ASAP. I've set up a goal for vet care that should cover whatever she and my senior cat Immi both need. Anything else will go to groceries as I still need to eat somehow.
