:linux: Guess who I'm going to send this signed Pepper & Carrot comic to? 😺

#linux#tablet#kernel

@hacknorris Haha, no, I don't think @torvalds is a reader of Pepper&Carrot. It's a gift I'll send to a kernel dev who fixed my tablet recently ( davidrevoy.com/article1002/how ), this post is a little follow up. 🙂

David RevoyHow a kernel developer made my styluses work again on newer kernels!

@davidrevoy i was wondering your thoughts on xp-pen and Krita. I'm currently thinking on switching from my old wacom cintiq to a new xp-pen but I am cautious. Is it working well in your opinion?

@troken Hi, it depends the operating system mainly, and the key app in the communication is "the driver". On GNU/Linux/X11, I do a complete review and share all my tips to install it in a comfortable way. davidrevoy.com/article1004/xpp Everything works well here with Krita here, pressure, tilt, all at its full potential.

But I haven't tested with proprietary drivers made by XpPen on proprietary systems like Windows and Mac. Maybe someone on Ytb did?

David RevoyXPPen Artist Pro 16 (Gen 2) - review on GNU/Linux

@davidrevoy thanks, I use Ubuntu so it should work I guess! Highly appreciated!

David Revoy

@troken Yes, on the X11 session of GNOME t should be possible to customize it as in the article. With a bit of luck, newer Ubuntu will have it working 'out of the box' on Wayland. I'm working to give feedback to developper for the things to go into this way. 🙂

@davidrevoy I don't understand all, but I picked up that Wayland is the standard for many distributions nowadays. So hope they will update drivers accordingly. 🙂

@troken Well, yes it is going to be the standard (and in mid 2024, distro like Fedora will remove totally X11). Unfortunately, Wayland changes the architecture: it's now up to the Desktop Environment to implement the settings for tablets. So, getting a tablet working will soon depend of KDE or GNOME or something else, but not for all D.E ... 😔 Also, color calibration was an oversight for years on Wayland.
All in all, this might make GNU/Linux improper for pro Artists/Graphists...

@davidrevoy I actually have been struggling with colour calibration on my new install... 😔 That's probably it...

@troken Yes, but don't worry: with the deadline of 'Wayland must be ready' a team of dev, and artist who gives feedback (eg. me) are following carefully all of this. It might not be perfect by mid 2024 but already giant steps were done in the last monthes compare to what was done over the last 6 years. So there is also a big hope. Fortunately, distro with X11 like Debian will exist for a long time so I'll not have to go Win/Mac in case the Wayland-only is fully improper by 2024.

@davidrevoy good advice. I've been thinking about trying Debian so why not?

@davidrevoy @troken I have tried to record all my steps broadly bu I might have missed some, so any questions or suggestions are welcome. I will keep on updating it also to include any missing thing that i did not record initially. For example I forgot to record that debian now has non free firmware on the installation media so if your wifi needs it is then it is now easier compared to previous versions.

@raghukamath @davidrevoy
I'm worried about DiplayCAL, since it has seemed to been abandoned. Any thoughts about it?

I mean, it is still doing great calibration, but now it has problems finding AgryllCMS-files and other things I've noticed. So it is more manual handling -> doing the calibration -> save the ICC-profile -> manually load the ICC-file into the distros color manangement. At least on Ubuntu.

@troken @davidrevoy @troken @davidrevoy The debian repository has updated its version to the new python3 fork that is active now. So no issues there. You just install it normally from repository with sudo apt install displaycal and do your calibrations. I did not encounter any issues. Are you using wayland or x11?

@troken @davidrevoy There is some issue with automatic loading of the icc profile on first run but that was present in fedora and arch too for me. With a reboot you can see the profile in kde systemsettins you need to just check the radio button.

@raghukamath @davidrevoy the issue is primary that displaycal don't have permission to install the icc after the calibration. I'm using Ubuntu default (vanilla) so it is wayland I presume.

@troken @davidrevoy Yeah on wayland it would not have any access to anything by design unless the compositor or some other thing provides it access. I would also worry about the accuracy of the profile it created. I have not tried using it under wayland yet. I would suggest you to use x11 for production work and wayland only for testing and bug reporting etc.

If at all you have trust in the profile it created and want to install the profile you can do that with gnome I suppose you need to select the profile in settings at least on KDE there is a place in system settings to do load your own icc profile by wither installing it system wide or for per user. So on next reboot it is used on startup
