I kind of miss RTS games with a great single player campaign. Personal gold standard are of course Homeworld, Starcraft and Warcraft III for me. Using the framework of realtime strategy to tell a story can make sense for a variety of stories, but - and I might be wrong with this - the last ones I can remember were, I don't know, perhaps Grey Goo and Halo Wars 2, who at least had a great presentation.

🇬🇧 Well, that was quick - apparently, I only need to wish for #Homeworld to be on sale for it to happen. 😂
Anyway, I treated myself to the HW Remastered Collection during #SteamSpringSale, so I'm probably going to start my journey into outer space soon! 😊

🇬🇧 And that's it for #HomeworldDesertsOfKharak!
My first foray into the #Homeworld series, and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
It's a really good #RTS, although it took me some time to get used to some of the mechanics.
In any case, I'm looking forward to playing Homeworld 1 - eventually, as I haven't bought it yet. 😅
Till then, I think I will play around a bit in DoK’s Skirmish mode.

Empire of Ants Isn’t the Epic Ant RTS you Think it is, but It’s not Bad

I was sent a free copy of Empire for Ants to review for my blog. While I am very grateful for the opportunity, I won’t let it sway my opinions. This will be my honest review.

What is Empire of Ants?

Empire of Ants is a unique 3rd person RTS out now on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC via Steam and Epic Games.

You are an industrious scout ant tasked with expanding the empire for your beloved queen. But this is no easy task, even for the mighty ant. Enemies lurk around every corner, and it is up to you to hold them back. Command your legions of ants and fight your way through the forest floor all in the name of the queen. Will you fulfill your role and successfully expand the mighty ant empire, or will you be another nameless drone lost in the cycle?

Gameplay

Players get to experience the world from a third person view of a mighty scouting ant. Players will complete quests and command legions of ants to gather resources, attack and defend against enemies, and expand the might ant empire. Players will essentially pick up missions, platform across the wilderness, and command units to attack enemies or gather resources.

Review

Empire of Ants does not work on the Steam Deck, at least not without some tinkering. This isn’t a deal breaker, but I would keep away if the Steam Deck is your main source of gaming.

When booting up Empire of Ants, players will be greeted with a beautiful world and design. The graphics and art in this game are beautiful, and I spent a lot of time on exploration because of it. The combat animation for the ants is pretty good, but there is some jank. Ants other insects will randomly fly out in every direction. Other than that, the sounds, the plants, and ants all look really good.

The game itself performs well, with a few performance issues that can be a bit hard to ignore. Sometimes the ant doesn’t move in the direction you want it because it starts climbing a random branch you didn’t notice, and other times the camera doesn’t respond how you need it to. It doesn’t make the game unplayable, but they do get in the way of the immersion.

The gameplay is where this game becomes a difficult sell. The game works well, but the loop is a little repetitive. If you’re looking for a competitive RTS about ants, you might get it from multiplayer, but you won’t get it from the story. The game feels a little easier than your traditional RTS, which is fine for the casual or kid, but not for the veteran looking to pad their library. I am terrible at RTS games and found this game too easy. A lot of the game does feel like an ant platformer, which is fine, but not what some people are looking for.

This game is cute, and has some cool ideas, but I would wait for a sale. I think the gameplay is a little too repetative to be worth the $40 and most people looking to play this as their RTS will be disappointed. Empire of Ants isn’t a bad game, it just doesn’t do enough to earn its price.

You can buy Empire of Ants on on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC via Steam and Epic Games for $39.99, but I would wait for a sale.

Played a boardgame tonight with four of my similar-age friends and compared somebody's move to a Zergling rush. Not one of them had any idea wtaf I was talking about. Total blank looks. Keyword "Starcraft" didn't shake loose any comprehension. Totally never any part of their lived experience.

(Of course they all had serious straight jobs for the last 35 years instead of being willfully semi-self-underemployed like me.)

Game: Townsmen - A Kingdom Rebuilt

Platform: Steam
Release Date: Feb 27, 2019
Installation Date: Oct 21, 2023

Playtime: 25m

Townsmen - A Kingdom Rebuilt is an isometric real-time strategy city-builder, with a medieval setting.

I got a whole bunch of games on the 21st of October. I was talking with my son about how I'd skipped a couple of months of Humble Choice in the past few years, and he gave me most of the games I was missing (because he didn't want them).

Included in those games was Townsmen - A Kingdom Rebuilt; this review could also be "A tale of two city-builders".

The graphics in Townsmen are quite cute, and it makes Townsmen look like it could be a lot of fun.

Unfortunately, that's the best part of this game, because the actual gameplay is incredibly frustrating.

As an aside, in-game grammar and spelling mistakes immediately break my concentration. One typo is an oversight. Multiple typos and grammar errors sets my teeth on edge. This was not a good start for Townsmen.

The biggest issue I had with Townsmen is that it's less a city-building sim, and more of a city-micromanagement sim. I want to build buildings. I don't want to have to go to each building independently and assign and unassign workers (particularly in early game).

Buildings also degrade over time, and can catch on fire if they degrade too much. How do you know? Apparently they start to change colour. So now I have to remember to look at each building individually to see if it's changed colour and might need repairs. To repair a building, click on it to bring up the building interface. Click on a drop-down menu, and choose "Repair Building". Actually, this building is normally that colour, and doesn't need repairs. Like I said, micromanagement.

The tutorial levels give tasks, and give optional tasks, and would intermittently stop everything to remind me to complete the task I was *working* on.

"You need more wood, build another sawmill. You need another worker to build the sawmill. Build a new townhouse. You need more wood for the townhouse."

So I'm going around pulling workers from other jobs to put them on different jobs so I can complete the jobs to complete the tasks, which you've just paused the entire game to remind me to complete.

Anno 1800 hooked me so deeply that it was a case of "two hours already?", where this had me checking the clock repeatedly.

It's not just that it suffers in comparison to Anno 1800, compared to all of the other citybuilders I've played this year, Townsmen - A Kingdom Rebuilt is:

Game: Anno 1800

Platform: Ubisoft Connect
Release Date: Apr 17, 2019
Installation Date: Nov 6, 2023

Anno 1800 is a 3D real-time strategy city-builder, set in the 19th Century.

I bought it today.

"But Allie, you have too many games. You have new ones coming on Wednesday morning in the November Humble Bundle! Why would you buy a new game?"

Ubisoft had a free weekend, and I made the mistake of installing it. Then playing it. Had I not played it (wouldn't be the first time I installed a game on a free weekend and forgot to play it), I wouldn't have encountered an antagonist so eminently punchable (Edvard Goode) that I wanted to keep playing solely to grind his company into dust.

With a 20% discount on top of the already discounted price through Ubisoft taking it to a historical low of AUD$17.99, it was almost impossible to say "no".

In terms of actual gameplay, it hooked me early, and I was suddenly staring at an in-game popup that said "It's been two hours, how about a cup of coffee."

Anno 1800 is:
