The trade war between China and the United States continues to escalate. For a variety of reasons, it appears unlikely that Xi will back down. One key question is: which country is more capable of enduring prolonged economic hardship? Unfortunately, the answer may be China, due to its centralized state control and authoritarian political system, which allows for tighter management of public dissent and economic disruption.

The world’s two biggest economies have been engaged in a fast-moving tit-for-tat that has seen the cost of trade soar over the past two weeks.
On Friday, China’s top leader, #Xi Jinping, spoke publicly about the tariffs for the first time since Washington & Beijing started hitting each other with progressively higher levies this month.
“There are no winners in a tariff war,” he said.
So now we have two male leaders of powerful countries having a contest to see who has the biggest ...erm.....

Xi doesn't care about the chinese economy or his people. If China can cripple the USA in this geopolitical fight he is perfectly willing to let China suffer for it. He probably calculates correctly that the chinese people can handle more suffering then those in the US. Trump, as usual, is miscalculating.

A de facto "critical-minerals embargo" being imposed by #China on the #US was to be expected.
In fact, it is somewhat surprising that President #Xi did not implement it sooner, after the #US cut off high-end GPUs for #China, which are critical for the #AI race.
It might even be a wise strategy to counter Trump's de facto all-out global #TradeWar.
