My husband’s ability to participate in the smart home from Android is a primary motivation for trying Home Assistant. I want to make sure this works well for him first because I can tolerate papercuts.

Google Home support requires a fucking cloud service. In the year of our lard 2025. This is dumb. Apple Home gets this right. Google engineers should go watch my conference talk on leaf computing.

Thought I’d reactivate my Google Home Mini and use it as an alarm playing relaxing bird/nature sounds.

Nope, I am being woken with "OK, PLAYING RELAXING NATURE SOUNDS ON SPOTIFY".
Why even offer automation when you handle it the same way as manual prompts …

I *really* want to shift from Google Home to Home Assistant, freeing myself of the need for the data-hoovering platform, but damn it, HA is such a hurdle, even for a nerd like me.

Add a new thing to Google Home, a few clicks and it's there. The interface is neat and tidy. Things are placed in pretty sensible groupings. Automations are fairly straightforward.

Add a new thing to HA, add the integration (fair enough), figure out the difference between devices and entities, add an unsupported feature from Github, install something via HASS, configure some kind of API access at the manufacturer website, try to get a widget that doesn't look rubbish, device is *probably* useable. Swear under breath. Sacrifice goat.

HA has a long-assed way to go.

Did you know that #GoogleHome devices are
- able to call 911
- but only with an $8 monthly subscription?!?

Google (and Amazon, and Apple) put the ability to call emergency services behind an monthly paywall, creating a dystopian tiered system where only rich and technologically savvy families have the means to save themselves in a crisis.
