About half way through #CarelessPeople .. wouldn't have normally read it, but since Zuckerberg felt I shouldn't, I had no choice really...
And wow. #Facebook and its executives are exactly the type of awful I had expected they'd be.

Sarah Wynn-Williams survived a shark attack at 13 that almost killed her. Her sister survived a collapsed building in the Christchurch 'quakes. Zuck, do you think someone from this family fears a Meta lawsuit when you and your team are snowflakes compared to what they've already encountered? #CarelessPeople #book #law
2/ Follow up. Controversial insider account by former #Meta official has strong first-week sales—On Wednesday, “ #CarelessPeople ” ranked No. 3 on Amazon.
The former employee was barred from promoting the explosive memoir after META obtained an emergency injunction barring the author from promoting the memoir or bad-mouthing the tech giant
Here's a review of "Careless People", the book Meta is trying to stop.
The reviewer notes that the author too has some glaring blind spots. I'm only half way through the book, and haven't gotten to most of the points mentioned yet, but I too have noticed signs of this. Regardless, it's an interesting read, and well written.

Facebook banging on about there being no evidence for negative impacts of phones/internet/facebook access on kids, whilst their management routinely refuse to let their kids use facebook, or have phones..... because *your* kids using facebook is growth, but *their* kids using it is dangerous to their young minds.
Makes sense.
Nearly halfway through the Facebook thing, Careless People. Hooeey, it’s quite a read. #FaceBook #CarelessPeople #WTF #books
The Streisand Effect is in full force now with "Careless People," Sarah Wynn Williams' memoir about her time as director of global public policy at Facebook — the book is now at No. 3 on Amazon's bestsellers list. Former colleague Katie Harbath, who was Facebook's public policy director for global elections, recalls things differently to Wynn Williams, and says the book is "riddled with factual inaccuracies and exaggerations." Here's her post, "Careless People is Careless," on her Anchor Change Substack. "For those who didn’t work at the company or with Sarah, this book is a page-turner," she says. "Meta choosing to seek arbitration to block Sarah’s ability to promote it helps feed the intrigue for what is in it. (It is also ironic for Meta to be complaining about her not fact-checking the book when they just got rid of their fact-checking program.)"

The above is regarding the newly released book, #CarelessPeople: A History of Where I Used to Work by Sarah Wynn-Williams, about her time working at #Facebook.
Just finished listening to Careless People by Sarah Wynn-Williams, and it was absolutely brilliant. The writing style was so gripping, that I sometimes forgot this was non-fiction.
read most of #CarelessPeople last night, the recently released book about Facebook. holy shit this is rough reading, but also i feel i can replace Mark Z with a bunch of previous tech CEOs i've had and it'd be the same
gotta love big tech (/s)

'Last Wednesday, Meta successfully obtained a ruling blocking whistleblower Sarah Wynn-Williams from promoting her memoir Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism. Today, the book is third on Amazon's Best Sellers list. Who could have seen this coming?'

Excerpt from #CarelessPeople :
« When we start to run into politicians who put up roadblocks to our expansion, the growth team is quick to suggest that we “juice” the algorithm to help them bolster their Facebook presence. The way they put that? “Let’s dial up the algorithm to give politicians some love.” »
BTW Javi Olivan, who led the growth team at the time, has been elevated to the role of Meta’s COO (since the departure of Sheryl Sandberg).
Update no. 2:
Yesterday my 4-year-old woke up at 7am thus thwarting my plans to read #CarelessPeople for a good hour.
So today I woke up at 6am to resume reading the book. It’s THAT GOOD.
The leaders at #Meta have been shockingly irresponsible in their decisions since the early days. All they care about? Gathering data and influence and making big bucks. I’m so glad I got out of all their platforms and I’m on the #Fediverse instead.
History books won’t be kind to Zuck, Sandberg et al.
Is this what they call the Streisand Effect?
My local library has ~1200 holds on copies of Careless People:
A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism
by Wynn-Williams, Sarah
Good Job, Meta / Facebook
Guess it’s up readers to promote the book in the author’s place then. I support it and her and recommend getting a copy.
This is a good test for Meta/Facebook #Threads vs the Fediverse. Are #WynnWilliams / #CarelessPeople threads being quashed on Threads(TM)? Or is the Streisand effect happening there too?
